Atlantic Forest

The Atlantic Rain Forest of Brazil (in Portuguese: Mata Atlântica) extend along the Atlantic Ocean cost for about 3,000 km.
Although it survives around just the 10% of the original Atlantic Forest, the protected areas represent one of the richest biomes in the world with high biodiversity and endemism, second only to the Amazon.

An about 8% of the world's plant species occur in the Atlantic forest most of them are endemic, including the pau brasil (Caesalpinia echinata). More than 900 bird species are found here, with many threatened and 180 endemic (highest number of endemics in the world). Around 260 mammal species have been recorded, including endemic such as the golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia), the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) and southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides). Amphibian diversity is also very high, with 60% of Brazil species.

The Atlantic forest is divided in several habitat types. In the lowlands we can found Mangrove forests, the Restinga (sandy soils) and Tropical moist broadleaf forest. Further inland, deciduous and semi-deciduous forests, Araucaria forest (Araucaria angustifolia) and the Campo Rupestre (high-altitude grasslands).

The Atlantic Forest South-East Reserves, in the Brazilian states of Paraná and São Paulo, contain some of the best and most extensive examples of Atlantic forest in Brazil. These 25 protected areas, covering some 470,000ha, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Some higlights you can see during our tours include: Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, Red-tailed Parrot, Black-backed Tanager, Saw-billed Hermit, Festive Coquette Long-tailed Tyrant, Crescent-chested Puffbird, Tropical pewee, Spot-breasted Antvireo, Tufted Antshrike, Scaled Antbird, Calyptura Cristata, Unicolored Antwren, Spotted Bamboowren, Buff-throated Purpletuft, White-bearded Manakin, Blue-manakin, Pin-tailed Manakin Slaty Bristlefront, Saffron Toucanet, Red-breasted Toucan, Green-crowned Plovercrest, Surucua Trogon, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Itatiaia Spinetail, Slaty Bristlefront, Shrike-like and Black-and-Gold Cotinga and many more.
